The project began in February 2020 when we were asked to develop a smart refrigerator system called “The Pantry”. The system aimed to allow tenants in residential buildings to purchase snacks and groceries at any time with automated payments. Zeron developed two custom electronic boards, integrating weight sensors, USB, MDB, Ethernet, and I2C communication protocols. The firmware, written in C++ for an ARM processor, seamlessly connected to an Android app. The project faced significant technical challenges, including managing high-voltage circuits, temperature sensors, and precise real-time data transmission, all of which were resolved within a rapid development cycle.
As we approached production, we focused on handling real-time data from dozens of weight sensors, each generating thousands of measurements per second. A sophisticated algorithm was developed to manage customer behavior and ensure 100% accuracy in detecting item placement and removal. In the process we had to refine both firmware and the algorithm to stabilize performance, and thus the 2nd generation of PCB was brought to life. Following successful tests, the project moved swiftly to production of several dozen units, and the first batch of refrigerators was deployed, delivering a robust, user-friendly solution that operated reliably in real-world conditions. The success of “The Pantry” soon led to its acquisition by Mini-Yellow, a subsidiary of Paz Energy. This strategic move enabled mass production at scale, with a dedicated manufacturing facility set up to produce thousands of units that run on the 3rd generation PCB that boasts improved robustness and cyber security. Integration with Yellow’s customer club added value, allowing users to access the refrigerators seamlessly through a dedicated app we developed, used for purchases.
